Funes
Village
A town crossed by the Arga river, which divides it into two sectors, near its confluence with the Aragón and the Ebro. Its place-name, documented as "al-Funs" in 888 and "Funis" in 1033, would come from the Latin "finis" (boundary) or "fundus" (estate).
El Fuero de Calahorra de Funes
Historical milestone
In 1110, King Alfonso I the Battler granted the inhabitants of Funes the fuero de Calahorra (Charter of Calahorra), after it had been, in the 11th century, the center of a border tenencia (frontier command) facing the Muslims.
La aljama judía de Funes
Historical milestone
The Jewish community of Funes flourished under the patronage of Sancho VI the Wise from 1171, until it was destroyed during the disturbances of 1328; in 1378 Castilian troops sacked the town, causing much of its population to emigrate to Peralta.
