The title of Marqués de Cadreita was created on 29 April 1617 by Felipe III in favor of Lope Díez de Aux de Armendáriz, viceroy of New Spain; in 1645 the marquisate became linked to the duchy of Alburquerque through the marriage of his daughter Juana Francisca, a union that lasted for three centuries.
