Village
Monreal/Elo, at 545 m altitude next to the Sierra de Alaiz, was a royal hunting residence of the kings of Navarre. King García Ramírez granted it the fuero de los francos de Estella (Charter of the Francos of Estella) in 1149, and it even minted its own coinage between 1383 and 1384 under Carlos II. It has 511 inhabitants (INE 2025); the origin of its Basque name, Elo, remains unclear.
Castillo de Monreal
Monument
Of the medieval castle of Monreal, which once hosted royal courts and illustrious prisoners, only ruins remain following its demolition in 1521 by order of the Castilian monarchs; recent excavations have brought to light the keep and a cistern.
