A small freshwater lagoon of 18.4 hectares, within a protected wetland of 65 hectares located north of the C-260 road between Olot and Roses; together with the Estany de Vilaüt and Estany de Palau de Dalt, it forms the Estanys integral nature reserve in the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà. Its shores, bordered by tamarisks, are covered with reed beds and rush beds, and the area stands out as a nesting site for the bittern. It is part of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park, and is included in the PEIN and in the Natura 2000 Network, with the code ES0000019.
