Castle of Taradell Monument · Taradell, Osona, Barcelona The castle of Taradell, also known as the castle of Can Boix, stands 2.2 kilometres southeast of the town, crowning a summit of great rocks at 803 metres of altitude, above a large cave that makes it very distinctive. Remains from the tenth-eleventh centuries survive, in the area of the old chapel of Santa Cruz, today very damaged, and a large wall about seventy metres long from the fourteenth century. Documented since the year 893, it was initially the property of the lords of Taradell, passed to the Vilademany family in 1165 through marriage and to the Cruïlles family in 1500; conceived for defence and watch, it was never inhabited by its lords, only by a detachment of soldiers. It lost its strategic value in the sixteenth century, when the tower of the square of Taradell was built, and it was left in ruins and abandoned.
