What to see and do in Montenegro de Cameros

Montenegro de Cameros
Village
Montenegro de Cameros is a municipality in the province of Soria, the only village in the comarca of Cameros that does not belong to La Rioja, situated at the foot of the Santa Inés pass and on the Ebro slope; almost the entire municipal area is protected within the Natura 2000 Network for the sierras of Urbión and Cebollera. Part of the López de Tejada family came from here, transhumant herders who in the early 19th century settled on lands in Extremadura at Brozas and Navas del Madroño, where they drove their merino sheep every year. With about 43 inhabitants, its church holds an altarpiece attributed to Alonso de Sedano, and the hermitage of San Mamés has been a Monumento histórico-artístico (Spain's former category of heritage protection) since 1983.
The Altarpiece of Alonso de Sedano
Monument
The parish church of Montenegro de Cameros, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, preserves an altarpiece with paintings attributed to Alonso de Sedano, a Castilian painter active between the late 15th century and the first quarter of the 16th, whose career unfolded mainly in Burgos. It is the Retablo de la Vida de la Virgen, dated to around 1510, one of the master's documented works. Its style, of Hispano-Flemish Gothic roots, shows the taste for detail and anecdotal scenes typical of that tradition together with influences from the Italian Renaissance, visible in the use of perspective and in the interior architectures depicted.
The Hermitage of San Mamés
Monument
The hermitage of San Mamés, in Romanesque style, stands in Montenegro de Cameros, a municipality in Soria that went from 532 inhabitants in 1842 to just over forty today, with 99% of its area under environmental protection. It was declared a national historic-artistic monument on 20 April 1983, by royal decree published on 3 June of that same year and signed by the Minister of Culture, Javier Solana, and King Juan Carlos. In July 2020 a restoration process concluded, funded mainly by the Junta de Castilla y León and, to a lesser extent, by the Diocese of Osma-Soria; it today holds the status of Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
The Merino Sheep of the López de Tejada Family
Historical milestone
In the golden age of the Mesta, during the Early Modern period, families from Montenegro de Cameros, the only Cameros enclave in the province of Soria, drove flocks of merino sheep down to Extremadura every autumn; some ended up settling there permanently.
