What to see and do in Villarejo de Montalbán

Villarejo de Montalbán
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Jara, in the province of Toledo, where the humanist Juan de Lucena set up at the end of the fifteenth century a printing press devoted to publishing books in Hebrew, one of the first of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula; its district preserves a Roman bridge over the river Cedena with two arches in good condition, the Campanero water mill, of the seventeenth century, the wedged gorges characteristic of it and the site of the Riscal de Velasco, occupied since the Bronze Age.
Roman Bridge over the Cedena
Monument
Roman-era bridge over the Cedena river that preserves two arches in good condition, evidence of the ancient roads of the area. Very close by stands the Campanero bridge, of medieval origin, built next to the Roman one during a second stage of crossing the river.
Campanero Mill
Monument
17th-century water mill located on the course of the Cedena, next to the Campanero bridge, of medieval origin. This bridge was built next to an earlier Roman one, making use of remains from that period, and crosses the river with a single arch resting on the rocks of the bank.
Juan de Lucena's Hebrew Printing Press
Curiosity
The humanist Juan de Lucena set up a printing press in these lands at the end of the 15th century to publish books in Hebrew, one of the first of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula.
Archaeological site of el Riscal de Velasco
Nature
Settlement occupied since the Bronze Age, one of the most notable archaeological sites in the municipality of Villarejo de Montalbán. The site dates from the Middle Bronze Age and is located on a hill next to the Cedena river; ceramic remains and other archaeological materials typical of that period have been found there, attesting to human occupation of the site since prehistoric times.
The Gorges of Villarejo de Montalbán
Nature
Geological formations set into the municipal district of Villarejo de Montalbán, a distinctive spot linked to the history and traditional paths of the village. They are known to have been used historically as strategic passes, areas of natural defence and zones for farming and the use of water resources.
