Juan Catalina García López, historian Curiosity · Salmeroncillos, La Alcarria Conquense, Cuenca Image of Salmeroncillos, not of the place itself. Juan Catalina García López was born in Salmeroncillos de Abajo on 24 November 1845 and died in Madrid on 18 January 1911. He studied Philosophy and Letters and Law in Madrid and qualified at the Higher School of Diplomatics; he was an archaeologist, historian and bibliographer, official chronicler of the province of Guadalajara, royal commissioner of the 1891 European Historical Exhibition alongside Fidel Fita, and held chairs in Archaeology, Numismatics and Museum Organisation, as well as directing the National Archaeological Museum until his death. A full member of the Royal Academy of History from 1894, he was also a senator of the Kingdom on three occasions. He nearly lost his eyesight from studying manuscripts so much, and died in poverty after selling his house in Espinosa de Henares.
