What to see and do in Puerto Lápice

Puerto Lápice
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Mancha, in the province of Ciudad Real, born at a natural pass at 680 metres that connects the Manchegan plain with the road to Andalusia and already occupied in Roman times as a transit point. Cervantes set the first adventure of Don Quixote here, a memory kept up by the Venta del Quijote, of whitewashed courtyard and wooden galleries; its parish church was raised in 1859 to a design by the architect Francisco Enríquez y Ferrer and its festival of San Antón is famed for the thousands of rockets let off.
Don Quixote's Inn
Monument
A Manchegan inn with a whitewashed courtyard and wooden galleries in Puerto Lápice, evoking the inn where Cervantes has Don Quixote dubbed a knight. It is the essential stop on the Ruta del Quijote in the town.
Parish church of Puerto Lápice
Monument
A church built in 1859 to a design by the architect Francisco Enríquez y Ferrer, the main building of the town centre of Puerto Lápice.
The Lápice mountain pass
Nature
A natural pass at 680 metres above sea level linking the Manchegan plain with the road to Andalusia and giving the town its name, already occupied in Roman times as a transit point.
San Antón of Puerto Lápice
Activity
The feast of San Antón is celebrated in Puerto Lápice, in the district of La Mancha, from 16 to 19 January. The main day is the 17th, but the busiest is the 19th, the last day of the festival, when thousands of dozens of carretillas are burned, the characteristic ground-skimming rockets that have made this celebration famous.
Festivities of Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo
Activity
Puerto Lápice celebrates its main festival in honour of Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo from 7 to 10 September, with the main day on 8 September. The festivities begin on the afternoon of the 7th with a procession through the streets and the opening address, along with the crowning of the festival queens. The main day is given over to religious events, with the service in the morning and the procession at dusk. Alongside the religious events, races, dances and card and dominoes championships are held, rounding out the festive programme until the 10th.
Don Quixote's first adventure
Curiosity
Cervantes writes that there are authors who say that the first adventure that befell him was that of Puerto Lápice. The place also inspired Azorín's travel chronicle La ruta de don Quijote, published in 1905.
