Torralba de Calatrava
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Campo de Calatrava, in the province of Ciudad Real, set at 620 metres on a plain of arable land crossed to the north by the Guadiana; it preserves a rebuilt comedy playhouse with room for 740 spectators that retains original Renaissance arcading and drawings on its walls. Its patron is the Santísimo Cristo del Consuelo, with a chapel of Baroque bellcote and a week of festivities, and another chapel, that of la Purísima Concepción, was raised over the remains of an old fortress.
Patio de Comedias of Torralba de Calatrava
Monument
The Patio de Comedias of Torralba de Calatrava (Ciudad Real), on the Plaza de la Concepción, between the old castle wall and a municipal granary, has the earliest records of theatrical activity on the site dating from 1578, during the Renaissance; documents confirm that plays and puppet shows were performed there until the late 19th century. Recently rediscovered, it has been rebuilt as an additional venue of the Festival de Teatro Clásico de Almagro, with capacity for 740 spectators spread across four multipurpose spaces, 460 of them in the main courtyard. It retains the ribbed vault arches of the original structure and the drawings or graffiti scratched into its walls.
Church of la Santísima Trinidad de Torralba
Monument
A temple consecrated in 1541 in Torralba de Calatrava (Campo de Calatrava, Ciudad Real), with a 16th-century interior formed by a single, ample nave. It preserves a magnificent Mudejar coffered ceiling by Martín de Cuartas and a relief from the vanished main altarpiece, built in the early 17th century. The tabernacle holds a copy of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
Hermitage of el Santísimo Cristo del Consuelo
Monument
The hermitage of the Most Holy Christ of Consolation, patron saint of Torralba de Calatrava (Campo de Calatrava, Ciudad Real), is a single-nave building with a dome over the crossing. Inside are kept the image of the Christ and a silver lamp from the late 19th century, while outside a Baroque 18th-century brick bell-gable stands out, decorated with Tuscan pilasters and flaming finials and topped by a curved pediment. The festivities in honour of the Christ of Consolation are held from 13 to 20 September.
Hermitage of la Purísima Concepción de Torralba
Monument
The hermitage of the Immaculate Conception stands in Torralba de Calatrava on the foundations of the old fortress that gave rise to the municipality. It has a single nave covered with a flat ceiling and its brick bell-gable stands out on the outside. It kept parish status until 1544, and beside it remains of the old castle are preserved.
