Chess festival of Cañada de Calatrava Activity · Cañada de Calatrava, Campo de Calatrava, Ciudad Real Image of Cañada de Calatrava, not of the place itself. The festival, despite bearing the name of this small town of barely a hundred inhabitants, was actually held in the city of Ciudad Real, and saw only two editions, in 2006 and 2007. Rapid chess formats were played, at 25 and 5 minutes, with a prize fund of 122,000 euros backed by more than a dozen private companies. In the first edition, with 177 players in the international tournament, Alexander Grischuk and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov prevailed; in the second, with more than 240 participants, among them Judit Polgár, Vasili Ivanchuk and Viswanathan Anand, Alekséi Shírov, Daniel Fridman, Ivan Sokolov and Borís Gélfand topped the standings.
