What to see and do in Nerpio

Nerpio
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Sierra del Segura, in the province of Albacete, whose district climbs from the 1,080 metres of the built-up area to 2,083 on the boundary with Granada, Jaén and Murcia; more than thirty rock art groups are known in it, among them the Solana de las Covachas, with some two hundred figures of archers and fauna and declared a World Heritage Site in 1998. In the hamlet of Taibilla a castle is preserved that was the main Islamic centre of the territory and afterwards housed a commandery of Santiago, and the walnut trees of its valleys give the Nerpio walnut, covered by an identification of origin.
Solana de las Covachas
Monument
A group of rock shelters with Levantine cave art bringing together some two hundred depictions of archers, female figures and animals, between 10,000 and 6,500 years old. It forms part of the World Heritage declared by UNESCO in 1998.
Church of la Purísima Concepción de Nerpio
Monument
Parish church of Nerpio (Sierra del Segura, Albacete) dated to 1602 and dedicated to the Purísima Concepción, the main religious building in this mountain town. As early as 1849, Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico recorded it as the town's parish church, then served by a priest and a sacristan.
Castle of Taibilla
Monument
The Castillo de Taibilla stands at around 1,200 metres of altitude, on a cliff above the river of the same name, within the hamlet that takes its name from it, in the municipality of Nerpio (Albacete). It is already mentioned in 12th-century texts as the fortress of Tayviella. At the foot of the hill stands the casa fuerte, of Arab origin and today a remodelled manor house, which controlled access to the fortress; the outer wall on the south and west sides retains the wall-walk with battlements and arrow slits, and the keep stands out, which had four storeys and a cistern to collect rainwater, recently restored. Its importance was key to watching over the Kingdom of Granada, a task entrusted to the Order of Santiago from 1242 until the conquest of Granada in 1492.
Mountains of Nerpio
Nature
Mountain ranges that lift the municipal district from the 1,080 metres of the town centre to 2,083 metres, on the boundary with Granada, Jaén and Murcia. The Taibilla and Las Fuentes streams are home to trout and eels.
The walnuts of Nerpio
Curiosity
The walnut trees grown in the valleys of the municipal district yield a fruit of recognised quality, the Nerpio walnut, covered by a designation of origin and now a hallmark of the municipality's economy.
The southernmost municipality in Castilla-La Mancha
Curiosity
Nerpio is the southernmost municipal district in the province of Albacete and in the whole autonomous community, and it borders on the provinces of Granada, Jaén and Murcia at once.
Festivities of la Virgen de la Cabeza de Nerpio
Activity
Celebrations in honour of the patron saint of Nerpio, which bring together the people of the town and of the many scattered hamlets in the municipal district.
The rock art of Nerpio, World Heritage
Historical milestone
Unesco included in 1998 the rock art of the Mediterranean Basin in the World Heritage list; in the district of Nerpio more than thirty ensembles are known, with panels such as that of the Solana de las Covachas and its two hundred figures.
Segureño lamb
Food and drink
A rustic sheep breed adapted to the hard pastures of the sierra del Segura, raised in transhumant flocks that make use of scrubland and stubble. It gives a lean, flavorful meat that in Nerpio is stewed in caldereta or roasted over embers.
