What to see and do in La Gineta

La Gineta
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Mancha del Júcar-Centro, in the province of Albacete, exempt since 1553 from the jurisdiction of the town of Albacete and set on the old royal road towards the kingdom of Murcia, today a stage of the Camino de Santiago de Levante; its church of San Martín, Gothic of the early sixteenth century, preserves a seventeenth-century Baroque altarpiece and Gothic wall paintings recently uncovered. Known for its lentil growing, since the mid-twentieth century it has had chair-making as its economic driver.
Church of San Martín de La Gineta
Monument
A Gothic-Renaissance style church from the early 16th century, located on the calle de la Iglesia in La Gineta and declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1992. It has a central nave of four bays covered with star vaults with carved bosses rising from fluted twisted pillars, a solution related to that of some churches in Murcia and to that of Villena, and side aisles with different vault solutions, among them the chapel of the Sagrario, a Baroque structure from the 18th century. The tower, divided into four stages, bears the town clock and is topped by an octagonal belvedere. It preserves a Baroque altarpiece from the 17th century by Sánchez Cordobés and Gothic mural paintings recently discovered, among them a Last Supper.
Hermitage of San Isidro de La Gineta
Monument
Small hermitage on the road towards La Roda, closely linked to the farmers, who hold the festival of their patron San Isidro there.
La Gineta on the Camino de Santiago de Levante
Curiosity
The municipality is a stage on the Camino de Santiago de Levante, which links Valencia with Zamora and passes through several Albacete towns such as Almansa, Chinchilla and La Roda.
The lentils of La Gineta
Curiosity
The town became famous for growing lentils, the traditional basis of its farming before the spread of the pivot-irrigated fields that characterise its landscape today.
The chair industry in La Gineta
Curiosity
From the middle of the 20th century chair making became the economic engine of the village, given fresh impetus in 1972 by the businessman Juan García Rausell, who came from Ollería.
Festivities of la Virgen del Buen Suceso
Activity
Festival in honour of the Virgen del Buen Suceso, whose image is carried each year between the parish church and her hermitage.
