Pedro de San José Betancur, the first saint from the Canary Islands, was born in Vilaflor in 1626 before emigrating to Guatemala, where he founded the Bethlehemite order. On the site of his birthplace now stands the Santuario del Santo Hermano Pedro, a convent of that order.
