Mountain range of Algairén Nature · Mezalocha, Campo de Cariñena, Zaragoza The Sierra de Algairén, which separates the Campo de Cariñena from the Huerva valley, is part of the Iberian System and stretches from Alpartir to Mainar, running parallel to the Ebro valley, between the comarcas of Campo de Cariñena and Valdejalón. Its highest point is the Pico de Valdemadera, at 1,276 metres, accessible from Tobed, a town that serves as the usual starting point for hikers. It is formed of Cambrian slates and quartzites, uplifted during the Alpine folding between two large faults; the Alpartir ravine divides its north-western sector into two branches. Among its Mediterranean vegetation the cork oak stands out, an uncommon species in Aragon, along with rosemary, rockrose, juniper, holm oak and pine plantations. It is designated a Site of Community Importance within the Natura 2000 network. Photo: Xufanc (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Mezalocha
