In 1370 Henry II granted the lordship of Gines to the admiral Fernán Sánchez de Tovar. The municipality's population multiplied more than sixfold between the 1960s and 2010s, going from about 2,000 to more than 13,000 inhabitants.

Curiosity
On 10 January 2010 light snowflakes fell on Gines, after 56 years without recorded snowfall in the town. The municipality, with 13,634 inhabitants (2025) and just 2.90 km², is at 123 m altitude and 6 km from Seville; founded in Roman times as 'Ab-Genna,' it took the Arabic name al-Genne ('garden of Eden') before being conquered by Ferdinand III in 1248.
