This Málaga family produced José de Gálvez, Minister of the Indies under Charles III; Matías de Gálvez, Viceroy of New Spain; and above all Bernardo de Gálvez, a general who fought on the side of the rebels during the American War of Independence. Macharaviaya is twinned with Pensacola (Florida) in his memory and holds a re-enactment of that battle every 4 July. The town also had, from 1776, one of the first free, mixed-sex public schools in Spain.
