What to see and do in Macharaviaya

Macharaviaya
Village
A former Arab hamlet formally founded in 1572, it reached its height in the 18th century with the Gálvez family, to the point of being nicknamed 'little Madrid'. It now has barely 520 inhabitants.
Bernardo de Gálvez y la familia Gálvez
Historical milestone
This Málaga family produced José de Gálvez, Minister of the Indies under Charles III; Matías de Gálvez, Viceroy of New Spain; and above all Bernardo de Gálvez, a general who fought on the side of the rebels during the American War of Independence. Macharaviaya is twinned with Pensacola (Florida) in his memory and holds a re-enactment of that battle every 4 July. The town also had, from 1776, one of the first free, mixed-sex public schools in Spain.
Iglesia de San Jacinto de Macharaviaya
Monument
Church originally built in 1505 and rebuilt in the 18th century with funding from the Gálvez family, which houses their family crypt.
Casa natal de Salvador Rueda
Monument
Birthplace house of the modernist poet Salvador Rueda, born in 1857 in Benaque, a hamlet of Macharaviaya.
La primera escuela pública gratuita y mixta de España
Historical milestone
In 1783 a free, mixed-gender public school was established in Macharaviaya, considered the first of its kind in Spain.
Macharaviaya, el "pequeño Madrid"
Curiosity
Thanks to the Royal Playing-Card Factory, which held a monopoly on sales in the Americas, and the splendour of the Gálvez family, Macharaviaya was known in the 18th century as "little Madrid".
