What to see and do in Alcaudete

Alcaudete
Village
Municipality with 10,129 inhabitants (INE 2025), far below the nearly 20,000 it had in the 1950s; it was conquered by the Arabs in 715 and by the Christians in 1246, passing into the hands of the Order of Calatrava.
Primer pueblo andaluz sublevado contra los franceses
Historical milestone
On 7 June 1808 Alcaudete became the first Andalusian municipality to rise up against the Napoleonic invasion; in 1951 a magnitude 5.5 earthquake destroyed the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Fuensanta.
Castillo de Alcaudete
Monument
12th-century fortress-palace of Islamic origin, rebuilt by the Order of Calatrava, with a 40-meter tower that withstood the 1408 Nasrid siege; the church of Santa María la Mayor was declared a monumento histórico-artístico (the heritage protection category used between 1931 and 1985) by decree of 3 June 1931.
Ferrocarril del Aceite y hojaldrinas
Curiosity
The old station was part of the Ferrocarril del Aceite (Oil Railway), in service between 1893 and 1984; the local hojaldrinas (layered pastries) still follow the recipe created by the Mata family in 1949.
