What to see and do in Lepe

Lepe
Village
Agricultural and industrial town beside the río Piedras, capital of Huelva's strawberry production, with beaches spread between La Antilla and Nueva Umbría; since the 1970s its name has also featured in a well-known cycle of popular jokes.
Iglesia de Santo Domingo de Guzmán de Lepe
Monument
16th-century three-nave Mudéjar church, the main religious building in Lepe's historic centre.
El Ajimez de Lepe
Monument
Twin-arched window (ajimez) in the Mudéjar tradition, one of the few visible remains of Islamic and late-medieval Lepe, declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1985.
Paraje Natural Marismas del Río Piedras (sector de Lepe)
Nature
Lepe's coastline combines beaches such as La Antilla and Nueva Umbría with stretches of the nature reserve protected in 1989 around the estuary of the río Piedras.
El fresón de Lepe
Food and drink
Lepe accounts for much of Huelva's strawberry production, a crop grown under plastic that transformed the municipality's economy and agricultural landscape from the 1970s onward.
Los chistes de Lepe
Curiosity
Since the 1970s and 1980s, a cycle of jokes bearing the town's name has circulated across Spain, with no real connection to its residents; the town council itself has come to embrace this fame with humour.
Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Bella
Monument
In 1513 the Counts of Ayamonte founded a Franciscan convent next to Lepe dedicated to Santa María la Bella, which drew more than 4,000 worshippers to its pilgrimage and was abandoned and destroyed after the disentailment of 1836. The current hermitage, the work of Francisco Rodríguez Aguaded, was built in 1967-1968 next to the ruins of the convent; since a youth gathering in 1966, a pilgrimage has been held every May and continues today.
Torre del Catalán
Monument
16th-17th-century coastal watchtower, built as part of Philip II's defensive plan against Turkish-Berber attacks, with a truncated-conical body on a circular base, similar to the Torre Canela of Ayamonte though lower.
Molino de Valletaray
Monument
Tide mill now in ruins, located in the municipal area of Lepe, of which part of the facade over its foundation, topped with brick, is preserved.
Ermita de San Cristóbal (Lepe)
Monument
Freestanding building in Mudejar style near the Plaza de España in Lepe that historically welcomed travellers entering the town from the west.
