Caniles
Village
Conquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1487 and given as a lordship to Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the Gran Capitán. After the Morisco expulsion it was left depopulated and dependent on Baza until Charles II granted it an independent town charter in 1679. In 2025 it has 3,929 inhabitants.

After the Christian conquest of 1487, Caniles was granted as a lordship to Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the Gran Capitán. After the expulsion of the moriscos the village was left depopulated until it was resettled with colonists from other regions.

In 1679 Charles II granted Caniles a charter of privilege that completed its process of jurisdictional exemption from the city of Baza.

The arrival of the railway spurred the establishment of a sugar factory in Caniles in the early 20th century, active between 1901 and 1973, whose closure after a period of prosperity marked the local economy.
