Waterwheel of Los Torraos, Alguazas Nature · Alguazas, Vega Media del Segura, Murcia Image of Alguazas, not of the place itself. The Los Torraos waterwheel, in the spot of the same name next to the Segura river, is one of the largest on the river and is unusual in that no wood was used in its construction: it was built in 1789 on the Acequia Mayor of Alguazas with a metal skeleton of zinc, sometimes alloyed with aluminium to prevent corrosion. It is eleven metres in diameter, with fourteen spokes and fifty-six buckets with curved blades that make better use of the force of the water. Remodelled several times, most recently in 2001, it remains in operation today, raising irrigation water. Photo: El mismo que la publica en este medio. (Public domain) What to see and do in Alguazas
