The purchase of jurisdiction and the behetría

Historical milestone · Alguazas, Vega Media del Segura, Murcia

Image of Alguazas, not of the place itself.

The townspeople gathered the money needed to buy from the Crown their own jurisdiction and free themselves from the lordship exercised by the see of Cartagena, a singular case in the Region of Murcia. From 1590 Alguazas figured as a behetría (community free to choose its lord), with a council elected by the inhabitants themselves.
