Alfonso X, who reigned between 1252 and 1284, handed over Cieza to Pedro Núñez, Master of the Order of Santiago, in exchange for Abaniella, present-day Abanilla. The exchange brought Cieza under Santiago rule and explains the later construction of the Casa de la Encomienda in the center of the village.
