The Poblado de La Mota, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in the 1980s, is one of the most notable heritage sites in the municipality of Pliego. It is a fortified Islamic settlement, also known as the Castillo de las Paleras, located beside the barranco de La Mota. It was abandoned after the Mudéjar revolt of 1264-1266, when its population moved to what is now the centre of Pliego.
