The Chícamo River as it Flows through Abanilla Nature · Abanilla, Oriental, Murcia The Chícamo is a 31-kilometre river that rises in the Murcian hamlet of Macisvenda and flows into the Segura, of which it is a tributary, within a 453 km² basin. As it passes through Abanilla it crosses an arid badlands landscape, with spectacular erosion formations such as those of El Salado Alto, which can generate significant flash floods. The riverside vegetation combines oleanders, tamarisks, reed beds, esparto grass, thyme and rosemary, typical of a semi-arid climate; in a tributary ravine a population of Euphrates poplar (Populus euphratica) has been discovered. It receives the waters of the ramblas Mascosa and Zurca, which flow down from the sierra de Barinas, while in the nearby irrigated areas tomatoes, beans and artichokes are grown.
