Shrine of la Virgen de la Peña de Canara Monument · Cehegín, Noroeste, Murcia Image of Cehegín, not of the place itself. The sanctuary of the Virgen de la Peña de Canara stands at the foot of an imposing rocky crag in Canara, the most populous hamlet of Cehegín (Murcia), and is home to one of the oldest Marian devotions in the Region of Murcia. As early as 1256 a warden charged with guarding the fortress and the temple of the sanctuary is recorded. The Virgen de la Peña is the patron saint of Canara and was also that of Cehegín until the eighteenth century. Her festival is held from 14 to 19 August, with a pilgrimage (romería) and popular celebrations. Photo: PiotrMig (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Cehegín
