El Castellar of Bullas Monument · Bullas, Noroeste, Murcia Image of Bullas, not of the place itself. Fortress of Muslim origin built between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, before the Castilian conquest, on a promontory of the Peña Rubia, on the outskirts of Bullas. After the Mudéjar revolt of 1264-1266 it was given to the Order of the Temple along with its surrounding territories, passing in 1310 to the Order of Santiago after the Temple's suppression. It occupies a promontory bounded by cliffs on its north, south and east sides, measuring about 150 by 115 metres, at whose foot runs the river Mula; from it there is a visual link with Bullas, Cehegín and Mula, controlling the fertile valley of this river. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1997. Today only scant remains survive, including the base of the walls of an old quadrangular tower joined to a line of perimeter wall. Photo: COLORAETE (Public domain) What to see and do in Bullas
