La Manga del Mar Menor Curiosity · San Javier, Mar Menor, Murcia La Manga del Mar Menor is a town built on a 24 km coastal sandbar that separates the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean, in the south-east of the Region of Murcia. It was developed from 1961 onwards on the initiative of businessman Tomás Maestre, under a design by architect Antonio Bonet Castellano, and has since become one of the region's best-known tourist destinations. Administratively it is shared between two municipalities that manage the area through a consortium: Cartagena, on its southern stretch, between kilometres 0 and 3.5, and San Javier, on the rest, up to kilometre 21; further north, the sandbar continues within the municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar, protected as a natural area.
