Parish Church of San Francisco Javier Monument · San Javier, Mar Menor, Murcia The church of San Francisco Javier is the parish church of San Javier (Murcia) and gives the municipality its name and patron saint; it is one of the main religious buildings in its town centre. It originated as a hermitage built in the first quarter of the 17th century, around which a hamlet grew up, and became a parish in 1698 with Cristóbal Balaguer as its first parish priest. The present church, from the 18th century, follows the typology of the new Tridentine parish churches of the period, with a Latin-cross plan inscribed in a rectangle, a central nave, two side aisles, and a crossing covered by a hemispherical dome, and a four-tier tower topped with a belfry. It has housed a Museum of Sacred Art since 1994. Photo: Nurialsl (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in San Javier
