Royal Casino of Murcia Monument · Murcia, Huerta de Murcia, Murcia The Real Casino de Murcia, a social club founded in 1847, is one of the city's most emblematic buildings, and stands in the centre, on Calle Trapería, near the cathedral. Its construction began in 1853 and the premises grew room by room throughout the 19th century, mixing different artistic trends; the present façade, the work of the architect Pedro Cerdán, dates from 1902. Its rooms, among them the Patio Pompeyano, the Salón Árabe inspired by the Alhambra and the English Library, can be visited even though the building remains the seat of a private club: it is in fact the most-visited civil building in the Región de Murcia, with an average of 150,000 visitors a year in organised groups. Declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1983, it was thoroughly restored between 2006 and 2009, after which King Juan Carlos I granted it the title of Real.
