The creation of the marquisate of Beniel Historical milestone · Beniel, Huerta de Murcia, Murcia Image of Beniel, not of the place itself. The Marquessate of Beniel is a noble title created on 9 September 1709 by Philip V for Gil Francisco de Molina y Junterón, also known as Gil Francisco Molina de Junterón y López de Ayala, an infantry colonel and knight of the Order of Santiago who already held the viscountcy of the same name. Born in Murcia in 1659 and a city councillor, he had taken part in the wars of the Duchy of Milan and served as a gentleman of the king's chamber; he died in 1727 and was succeeded by his son Gil Antonio de Molina y Gonzaga, second marquess. The title linked the name of this town in the Segura valley to the titled nobility of the kingdom. 9 de septiembre de 1709 Photo: Macabreramarcos (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Beniel
