Torre Ciega Monument · Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena, Murcia The Torre Ciega is a Roman funerary monument from the 1st century BC located on the outskirts of the historic centre of Cartagena, next to the old road into the city, where a large necropolis once extended. It is one of the three best-preserved Roman funerary towers on the Iberian Peninsula, along with the Torre de los Escipiones in Tarragona and the Torre de Hércules in Villajoyosa. Ancient engravings preserve the inscription, now illegible, which dedicated the monument to Titus Didius, proconsul of Hispania Citerior in 94 BC. Its outer facing, in opus reticulatum of andesite, remained in good condition until the 18th century, when legends of hidden treasure led to it being bored into; it was restored in the mid-20th century by Pedro San Martín.
