Apolo Theatre of El Algar Monument · Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena, Murcia A theatre built in 1905 in El Algar, reflecting the period of economic prosperity the pedanía enjoyed during the mining boom. Also known as the Teatro Circo Apolo, it is a Modernist work designed by the architect Pedro Cerdán, opened on 4 January 1907. It is an Italian-style theatre, with stalls and boxes, which retains a recently restored hand-painted stage curtain. After years of poor conservation, in the late 1990s the Dirección General de Bellas Artes de la Región de Murcia (the region's Directorate-General for Fine Arts) began a restoration process that was completed in 2009. It has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1998. Photo: Nanosanchez (Public domain) What to see and do in Cartagena
