Holy Week in Cartagena Activity · Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena, Murcia Processions declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional (Spain's top-level designation for festivals of tourist interest) in 2005, led by four brotherhoods, among which stands out the historic rivalry between the Californios and the Marrajos, one of the reasons Cartagena preserves so many processional parades. They run from the early hours of Good Friday Eve, feast day of the patroness Our Lady of Charity, until midday on Easter Sunday; the first Marrajo processions on record took place in 1663. Their epicentre is the church of Santa María de Gracia, an 18th-century temple with an unfinished façade, in the old town. The penitents march to the beat of the drum, in unison, and the whole brings together sculptural work by Salzillo, Benlliure and other great image-makers. marzo o abril (Semana Santa) Photo: SanJuanistaMarrajo (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Cartagena
