Consistorial Palace of Cartagena Monument · Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena, Murcia The city hall, an 1907 work by the architect Tomás Rico Valarino, of triangular plan and with a grand imperial staircase inside, built on the site of the former town hall. The works, begun in 1900 to replace the old 16th-century Herrerian town hall, produced one of the main Art Nouveau buildings in Cartagena. The façade, of white marble and zinc domes, repeats the city's emblems: the Concepción Castle and the mural crown granted by Scipio Africanus. Around the staircase are arranged the plenary hall, the mayor's office and a collection of paintings of illustrious figures. Closed in 1995 due to structural damage caused by its foundations resting on land reclaimed from the sea, it reopened restored in 2006. Photo: Moríñigo (Public domain) What to see and do in Cartagena
