Museum of el Teatro Romano de Cartagena

Monument · Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena, Murcia

The Museo del Teatro Romano de Cartagena is the work of the architect Rafael Moneo, opened on 11 July 2008, devoted to the project of excavating, restoring and making known the city's Roman theatre. The theatre, commissioned directly by the emperor Augustus as part of his policy of Romanisation, was discovered by accident in 1988: there was no historical or archaeological record of it, since buildings had been erected over its remains until it was completely hidden, among them Cartagena Cathedral itself, partly superimposed on the theatre. Its construction employed local materials and techniques together with decorative elements imported from imperial workshops, with marble from Carrara and Greece.
