Los Belones Curiosity · Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena, Murcia Los Belones is a pedanía of the municipality of Cartagena, situated in the Campo de Cartagena and very close to the Mar Menor, alongside places such as Islas Menores, Mar de Cristal and Los Nietos; Cabo de Palos and La Manga are little more than ten minutes away by road, which has led it to be known as “the crossroads.” Its name comes from the Alicante-born brothers José and Manuel Bellón, regarded as its founders, both of whom died in the yellow fever epidemic that devastated the district in 1804. The climate is dry Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild winters, and scant rainfall concentrated in spring and autumn, which in September and October can turn torrential owing to the cold drop (gota fría) weather phenomenon. It is crossed by the rambla de la Carrasquilla, which rises near Atamaría and flows out next to Los Nietos. Photo: Maciej Lewandowski (CC BY-SA 2.0) What to see and do in Cartagena
