Grand Hotel of Cartagena Monument · Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena, Murcia The Gran Hotel de Cartagena is the most important Art Nouveau building in the Región de Murcia. It was commissioned by the mining entrepreneur Celestino Martínez Vidal from the architect Tomás Rico Valarino, who began the works in 1907; from the mezzanine level onward, Víctor Beltrí took over direction and completed the project. It was inaugurated on 29 February 1916 as one of the best hotels in Spain. During the Civil War it was requisitioned as the headquarters of the Unified Socialist Youth. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2012, it was reopened in 2016 as part of the events of the Year of Modernisme. It retains its original façade and rolled-steel structure, with a curved body topped by a zinc dome, one of the symbols of the eclectic architecture of central Cartagena.
