The Canton of Cartagena Historical milestone · Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena, Murcia Image of Cartagena, not of the place itself. Within the framework of the First Spanish Republic, the intransigent federalists raised the red flag over the Castillo de San Julián in 1873 and proclaimed the canton with the aim of turning the Region of Murcia into a federal state, as part of a project that envisaged Spain divided into different states. It was the longest-lasting of all the cantons raised in Spain, withstanding the siege of the central government's forces until 12 January 1874, with measures that bore similarities to those adopted in the Paris Commune of 1871. The surrender left more than three hundred buildings destroyed and only twenty-seven intact in the whole city. 12 de julio de 1873 - 12 de enero de 1874 Photo: P4K1T0 (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Cartagena
