El Algar Curiosity · Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena, Murcia El Algar, a pedanía of Cartagena, saw its houses grow richer with the 19th-century mining boom of the Sierra de Cartagena-La Unión, which left standing grand buildings such as the Casa Rubio and the Teatro Apolo, also known as the Teatro Circo Apolo. The latter is a Modernist work designed in 1905 by the architect Pedro Cerdán and opened on 4 January 1907; it retains a hand-painted stage curtain and, protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1998, it was restored between the late 1990s and 2009 after a long period of deterioration.
