Castle of Galeras Monument · Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena, Murcia An 18th-century fortification designed in 1765 by the engineer Pedro Martín Zermeño on Mount Galeras, in the diputación of San Antonio Abad, within the municipality of Cartagena. Its construction, directed by the engineer Mateo Vodopich, was completed in 1777, as part of the programme to improve Cartagena's defences driven by Charles III to protect the shipyards, next to the nearby castillo de la Atalaya. It entered Spanish history in the early hours of 11-12 July 1873, when a group of federal republicans roused the garrison in revolt, sparking the Cantonal Rebellion, an episode linked to the legendary, now discredited, anecdote of a Turkish flag raised by mistake. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1997, it now belongs to the Navy and cannot be visited.
