Maestre House Monument · Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena, Murcia The Casa Maestre is a Modernist residential building erected in 1906 on the Plaza de San Francisco in Cartagena, commissioned by the businessman and politician José Maestre Pérez from the architect Marceliano Coquillat, with Víctor Beltrí overseeing the work. Its stone façade, with a central axis and ternary rhythm, stands out for its curvilinear bay window and its Neo-Rococo main door. The Maestre family kept the house until the Civil War, when it was seized and turned into the headquarters of the Communist Party; returned after the conflict, the post-war crisis forced its sale in 1940 to the Banco Hispano Americano, which emptied its interior except for the original staircase, the stained-glass windows and a room on the first floor. It has been declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 2024. Photo: Diego Delso (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Cartagena
