Castillitos Battery Monument · Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena, Murcia The Castillitos Battery, also called C-1, stands at 250 metres on Cape Tiñoso, within the municipality of Cartagena; it was built and armed between 1933 and 1936, as part of the defensive belt that the Primo de Rivera dictatorship gave to the stronghold of Cartagena, with two Vickers-Armstrong 38.1-centimetre coastal guns, capable of firing a projectile of almost a tonne to 35 kilometres. Together with its twin, the Cenizas battery, it protected the entrance to the bay in crossfire, and it went so far as to fire on the Francoist navy in April 1937. It remained in service until 1994; after years of abandonment, the Ministry of the Environment restored it in 2009 and opened it to visitors. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1997, its façade imitates a medieval castle to conceal it from the sea.
