Augusteum Monument · Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena, Murcia The Augusteum forms part of the Roman forum of Cartagena, beneath the present-day Plaza de San Francisco, in the city's historic centre, and is integrated into the route of sites of the Cartagena Puerto de Culturas itinerary. After being raised in 44 BC to the rank of Roman colony under the name Colonia Urbs Iulia Nova Carthago, the city underwent, during the rule of Augustus, a process of Romanisation and urbanisation that made it one of the most splendid in the Empire. The building excavated south of the square served as the college of the augustales, or priests of the imperial cult, and it is today conserved and open to visitors. Also located in the forum are a temple to the Capitoline Triad and the curia, seat of the colony's government, decorated with luxurious marbles.
