Roman Amphitheatre of Cartagena Monument · Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena, Murcia An amphitheatre from the 1st century, built on the cerro de la Concepción in Flavian times, possibly over an earlier one from the Republican era, with capacity for between 10,000 and 11,000 spectators. Andesite from Cabezo Beaza and tabaire stone from Canteras were used in its construction, which has an elliptical plan resting partly on the rock of the hill and partly on vaults and buttresses. Unlike the city's Roman theatre, its ruins were always visible, and in 1854 the present-day bullring was built over its tiers of seating, making use of the Roman structure for its foundations. It is now being fully excavated and restored, with a project that will respect both constructions and will incorporate an annexed building dedicated to the Municipal Archive and to the future Museum of the city of Cartagena.
