Interpretation Centre of the Phoenician Ships of Mazarrón

Monument · Mazarrón, Bajo Guadalentín, Murcia

The Interpretation Centre of the Phoenician Ships of Mazarrón, opened in June 2009, is dedicated to the two 7th-century BC Phoenician wrecks found between 1988 and 2000 on Isla beach. Mazarrón I, discovered in 1988 during the construction of a marina, retained its keel, remains of frames and more than 8,000 ceramic fragments, and is now on display at the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology in Cartagena. Mazarrón II, found in 1994 and far better preserved, remained protected under a metal sarcophagus on the seabed until its extraction in 2024; at 8.10 metres long it is the most complete ancient ship found to date. The centre displays a replica of Mazarrón II and panels on the Phoenician presence on the coast.
