Modernist Town Hall of Mazarrón Monument · Mazarrón, Bajo Guadalentín, Murcia Image of Mazarrón, not of the place itself. The Casa Consistorial of Mazarrón, known locally as the Antiguo Ayuntamiento, is an eclectic-style building from the late 19th century. Work began in 1889 under the direction of the architect Francisco Ródenas Rosa and, after his death in 1892, was completed by Francisco de Paula Oliver Rolandi, who designed the staircase, the Salón de Plenos (council chamber) and the clock. Declared a Monumento Histórico Artístico (a former Spanish heritage-protection designation) in 1983, it has three floors and a basement that served as a jail; on the upper floor stands out the Salón de Plenos, with a gilded and green plaster coffered ceiling. The main façade, of exposed brick, is crowned by a modernist-style turret with a zinc roof. Vacated in 2001 due to its poor condition, it was refurbished and reopened in 2008 as a cultural venue.
