Holy Week of Lorca Activity · Lorca, Alto Guadalentín, Murcia Image of Lorca, not of the place itself. The Semana Santa (Holy Week) of Lorca is one of the most notable displays of this celebration in Spain, declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional (Spain's highest official tourism recognition for a festival) in 2007 and currently a candidate for UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. What sets it apart are the Desfiles Bíblico-Pasionales, parades featuring depictions of the Old Testament and Christian symbolism in which horses, carts and large-scale floats take part, evoking Egypt, Babylon, Rome and Persia. Silk embroidery is another characteristic feature of its processions, marked by the extraordinary rivalry between the Paso Blanco and Paso Azul brotherhoods. Although many processions are older, the parades as known today date back to the late 19th century. Semana Santa Photo: Ugo Cuesta (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Lorca
