The 1989 phylloxera outbreak in the Jumilla vineyards

Historical milestone · Jumilla, Altiplano, Murcia

Image of Jumilla, not of the place itself.

The vineyard of Jumilla, which had largely escaped the phylloxera of the nineteenth century thanks to its sandy, stony soils, suffered in 1989 a devastating attack that forced replanting on American rootstock and precipitated the modernization of its wineries.
